King Cobras are just one type of cobra. One out of hundreds of different types. King Cobras are the one and only snake in the whole world that build a nest for their kids like a bird but on the ground. King Cobras lay 20-40 eggs in a nest which is faithfully guarded by female. The eggs hatch in about 60 to 90 days.
King Cobra babies are called
hatch-lings
because they come from
eggs. Hatch-lings are about 50cm long. The King Cobra is also known as
the Ohiophagus hannah. The Latin word for snake-eater is Ophiophagus.
King Cobras eats other
snakes. King Cobras are the longest venomous snake in the
whole world.
Male King cobras grow to 18
feet long and a couple
have been
known to grow over 20 feet long. Most cobras are afraid of
people and run and hide when people are close. The exception of the King
Cobras who are aggressive and
will
rear up and stand their ground when harmed. King cobras mainly
inhabit Southern Asia, Northern
Africa and the Philippines. The king cobra forms a
hood when it feels harmed. When threatened it raises one third of its length and may sway toward you. The male King Cobra stays with the female and the eggs and takes turns guarding the nest as well as hunting.
